Owner/artist Jennifer Johnson is a native Hatteras Islander, and her photography reflects her love of the area. She also has several lines of locally handcrafted jewelry like her own ocean-inspired resin pendant necklaces and glass-beaded jewelry. Blue Pelican is also home to an ever-changing assortment of gifts and artwork from other local, regional, North Carolina and American artists and artisans, including laser-cut and engraved seasonal and wall decor. This drive-thru beverage store offers a huge variety of beer, wine (no hard liquor) and beverages, and you never have to leave your car – the cartender brings your order to you. You may also walk into the Breeze Thru General Store, which has everything you would expect from a convenience store but so much more, including lottery tickets, vaping supplies, cell phone minutes, phone accessories, an ATM, ice, propane, firewood, 5-gallon water jugs, wine, hats and, of course, the famous Breeze Thru T-Shirts. Breeze Thru also offers the only keg service on Hatteras Island (online order only). The store, which features Sunoco gas, is located at milepost 55 and is open seven days a week. Stop in to explore an assortment of offerings and village history. Print pictures at the Kodak Kiosk or book a guided history tour. The name honors a beloved Rodanthe resident, Nora Midgett Herbert, who had an abiding wish to open a gift shop to welcome the village visitors. Her husband built her the building on ship’s timbers in 1968, but the shop was not to be until decades later, following an unexpected renovation after Hurricane Irene.
