The Dare County-run Fessenden Center has a fitness center, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a playground, a skate park and tennis courts. Tennis courts are first-come, first-served during daylight hours, and there's a fee for non-residents. They offer fitness classes five days a week, which are free for Dare County residents and property owners 55 and older and are otherwise fee based. Visitors are welcome for all classes at the same rate and with a signed waiver. You can find Fessenden’s fitness class schedule on the Dare County website under the Hatteras section. The center offers programs and classes for all ages, from children to older adults. For children there are sports, summer camps and special events. Adults can choose from trips, sports, fitness and speakers.
The Fessenden Center's fairly new concrete skate park is a gem for local skaters; it's open from sun up to sundown, and protective gear is required.
