There is a wide variety of Hatteras Island vacation homes for rent or
sale. The most popular form of accommodation is the rental home in which Hatteras vacationers rent a fully equipped house by the week.

Thousands of rental homes can be found on Cape Hatteras, ranging from two bedrooms on Pamlico Sound to 10 or more bedrooms on the oceanfront, some luxurious, some simple. Rental home prices vary according to their amenities and proximity to the water. The rental process is made easy by several professional Outer Banks property management companies who take care of everything from deposits and contracts to cleaning and maintenance. Hatteras vacation rental homes are generally only available by the week, though you may be able to get a partial week if you can don’t mind waiting until the last minute to reserve. For late summer and fall rentals, the rental company will typically offer you the option of hurricane insurance for renters. It doesn’t cost much, and if you purchase it you won’t lose a deposit or be out any money if a hurricane threatens during your rental week.

Home rentals on Hatteras Island are available year round, though some homes close in the winter. The summer season is when rates are at their highest because that is when there is most demand for accommodations. Be sure to make reservations well in advance. Fall is also a busy season on Hatteras Island because of the excellent fishing. Winter and early spring rates can be very affordable, and oftentimes the weather is nice in those times.

Avon Cottages offers eight oceanfront cottages, seven semi-oceanfront cottages and 11 oceanside cottages. These modern rental homes greatly range in size, sleeping from five to 14. Each cottage has an ocean view, large living/dining/kitchen areas, central heat and air and is fully furnished. Some have Jacuzzis or hot tubs. The cottages are available to rent weekly, but there are also efficiency apartments available to rent by the night.

Dolphin Realty is a small company, but their small size and ability to offer personalized attention is their biggest advantage.

The Lighthouse View Motel offers 26 efficiency apartments with kitchens and 28 cottages ranging from two to four bedrooms and sleeping six to 10 people. All cottages are on the oceanside of the island in north Buxton. The motel has a heated outdoor pool and hot tub plus a lighted fish-cleaning table.

The Midgetts are a native family who were the first to offer vacation rentals on Hatteras Island. They offer approximately 575 rental homes and are well represented in all seven villages. Homes range from modest cottages for fishermen to luxury palaces for big families.

Outer Banks Motel offers six efficiencies with full kitchens and 13 cottages, all with phones and cable TV. The cottages and efficiencies are available by the week only in the summer. Outer Banks Motel also offers 20 cottages in the heart of Buxton, about a mile back from the ocean. These cottages range from one to three bedrooms and rent by the night or week.
